Global Wedding Customs

Last updated 11 months ago

The tradition of marriage is a celebration that is shared by almost every culture in the world, but in very different ways. While ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a mantra to live by for some brides, others believe in planting trees and decorating them with painted eggshells for good luck. Here are a few of the most interesting wedding traditions from around the world:

Wedding trees and newspaper – Germany

The wedding newspaper is a longstanding tradition for German weddings, alongside the planting of celebratory trees when a girl is born. When the wedding date is set, the trees are then sold and the money is put towards the bride’s dowry. The wedding newspaper is a combination of articles and clippings prepared for the couple by their close friends, which is also sold at the wedding to assist with the cost of a honeymoon.

Bouquet cuttings – Wales

A Welsh bride will traditionally include myrtle in her wedding bouquet, and give a cutting of the myrtle to her bridesmaids. If a bridesmaid plants the myrtle cuttings in their garden after the wedding, it is said she will be the next to get married.

Auspicious dates – China

It is tradition for a Chinese bride and groom to seek the help of a fortune teller, temple official or monk to pick their wedding date from the Chinese almanac (calendar). Without consulting the Chinese almanac, they will not be advised against celebrating on a particular day based on advice from the Heavenly Stem and the Earthly Branch. Certainly a change from most Sydney Wedding Receptions.

The money dance – Cuba

Cuban wedding receptions are among some of the most festive celebrations in the world, and include plenty of eating, loud music, dancing and a tradition known as the money dance. Every male guest that dances with the bride at the reception pins money to her dress, which is used to help pay for the couple’s honeymoon.
